Popeye Village
Oh, I’m Popeye the Sailor Man, I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. I’ll fight until the end.
I eat my spinach. I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. Since moving to Malta, I have yet to explore the island further; although it’s tiny, you can drive around in two hours.
My brother and his girlfriend were over for a long week to visit and explore the island, this being the first time they’d ever been to Malta as well.
The first few days of them being here with torrential rain and thunderstorms were unreal.
The only thing I wanted to do was go to “Popeye Village”. Triq Tal-Prajjet, Il-Mellieħa.
What an experience.. to say the least, It cost €12.50 entry fee and considering it wasn’t in peak season, it wasn’t hectic; with the entry ticket, you get boat ride access. (Be plan ahead; we didn’t go because it was stormy seas.) to all information of the making and on set, a punch & three photos following a free postcard.
We spent about 3 1/2 four hours there, which was on actual the construction location was breathless, and to think this is where all the action happened.
Robin Williams was filmed when he was 29 years old.
It’s fantastic looking at the architecture and buildings to see similarities within the film, thinking that’s where that shot was happening, where that was being filmed, etc.
The water was blue in the photos, and you could swim on the set where it was filmed on a private beach.
It’s a fun day out with friends and family, with bars and restaurants serving amazing huge burgers! It was a fantastic trip out, and I recommend it.
A few facts on Popeye
The many sunken ships in the harbour were seaworthy vessels rented or bought and then sunk.
The makeup appliances for Robin Williams’s fake forearms were not ready when filming began, so in early shots, Popeye wears a long-sleeved raincoat to hide his normal-sized arms.
The set for the town of Sweet Haven was built at Anchor Bay on the Mediterranean island of Malta.
After filming, it became a popular tourist attraction. Shelley Duvall sang all of her songs.
Evans commissioned Jules Feiffer to write a script. In 1977, he said he wanted Dustin Hoffman to play Popeye opposite Lily Tomlin as Olive Oyl, with John Schlesinger directing Many of the Citizens of Sweet Haven.
Especially those who had to do some physical gags were recruited from European circuses. According to Parish, Robin Williams referred to this set as “Stalag Altman”.
