Americans consume about 38bn hamburgers every year. Hamburgers are an iconic American food, an enduring favourite.
But what do Americans define as the American classic hamburger?
According to a new study by the Caravan Opinion Research Corporation for restaurant chain The Johnny Rockets Company, Americans also enjoy classics.
74 percent of Americans believe that despite the advent of gourmet hamburgers, the cheeseburger best embodies the classic American hamburger.
Even 86 per cent of Americans prefer beef hamburgers over turkey or veggie patties.
Many respondents believe that simplicity is important when it comes to to toppings, with 40 per cent preferring raw onions over grilled.
What's the secret to your own classic cheeseburger cooking?
"The best way to build the mouthwatering combination of beef and cheese from my personal experience is to barbecue the meat with the cheese on top," says Mike Shumsky, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnny Rockets. "A true cheeseburger must wait until the meat is completely cooked, then add a slice of cheese and cover for 30 seconds to properly melt the cheese."
Here is a recipe for a classic cheeseburger from the bar, the Rocket Single:
Unique sauce (mix to taste Thousand Island dressing, Dijon mustard, and hot sauce)
1 Slice of Cheese cheddar
1/3 st. Clean, seasoned, hand pressed and grilled beef
Grill the hamburger, ideally, until it reaches 160 F indoor temperature. Place the cheese on top and then cover for 30 seconds. Place yourself in a pot. Mix the dressing together and spread it over the bun. Layer on tomato, onion and lettuce.
